Ancient Beauty (2021 - ) is an attempt to make visible the arc of time that binds us to our planet, and to connect Earth’s deep past with our living present. It is simultaneously an exploration, an exposition, and an ecstatic expression of the grand scales of space and time at work in the Earth.  And it is a humble appreciation for this brief instant that we are blessed to bear witness upon it.

The completed work will be a collection of images that take the viewer on a guided tour, not just of Colorado’s geology and natural history, but through the broad swaths of geologic time that lie behind and beneath its grand and intimate landscapes. The locations photographed in the project have not been selected for their scenic nature, but instead for their scientific and geologic significance and the notable chapters in Colorado’s geologic past that bring that history to light. Each locality holds a chapter of Earth’s history, a history recorded in the rocks and written on the landscape. Seen in that light, Ancient Beauty is the testimony of a planet in constant flux, bearing witness to Earth’s slow impermanence, and by association, to our place within it. It is a call to see our vital home anew, with clarity, with understanding, and to the extent we are capable, with compassion and with humility.

Completion of the project is expected in 2025.
